Select ONE work of art and do a formal analysis of this artwork (1000 to 1500 words in length). Print off these instructions and the Formal Analysis Guide, and take them with you to view your artwork and guide your analysis!
2) Perform a detailed formal analysis of ONE single work of art WHILE YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE ARTWORK.
a) This is an exercise in looking. Therefore, any discussion of the artist’s biography, historical context, or your personal experience visiting the artwork will not be counted towards the word count.
b) Your essay MUST include a discussion of all the elements and principles listed in the Formal Analysis Guide. Be sure to discuss each element/principle IN ORDER and answer all questions listed in the Guide.
c) To further ensure a complete analysis, each element/principle must be printed in BOLD the first time it is used in your essay.
d) To organize your essay, your overall argument and conclusion should address how the artist achieved visual EMPHASIS through the use of each element/principle of art.
e) Your essay should be 1000-1500 words and written in coherent, flowing paragraphs – no bullet points. You may use APA or MLA format.
3) Include an image of the artwork with your essay. This image should show the artwork alone and in full view, so that I can evaluate your analysis against the original.
4) Create your own Compositional Diagram to accompany your written analysis.
a) A Compositional Diagram is the student’s visual expression of how the elements and principles work together in a specific work of art. No two students will ever have the same compositional diagram for the same artwork.
b) Essentially, this diagram is a drawing that may be done by hand or on the computer. It is basically a visual interpretation of your essay, which will use lines and shapes to show the relationship between the different elements of your chosen artwork. For example, if you notice an implied line from a figure’s eyes to an object in their hand, you will draw an actual line on top of the artwork from eyes to object.
c) Every compositional diagram is unique because each person will visually interpret a work in their own way, and each student will communicate what they want to emphasize in different ways. You may do your diagram over an image of the work itself or on a black page. Here are two examples of compositional diagrams of Las Meninas.

5) Both the image of your artwork and your compositional diagram must be inserted into the body of your Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF document, either at the beginning or end of your essay – NOT in a separate image file.
CHOOSING AN ARTWORK:
For the purposes of this assignment please chose your artwork carefully. Choose something that holds your attention, something you want to spend time with and explore more deeply, something you are immediately drawn to or find initially confusing or repulsive. Let this be an opportunity to learn more about yourself through your experience of an unfamiliar image.
For this assignment, you may choose any art media and any materials, with the exception of time-based art (meaning no video or performance). Choose an original artwork – no copies or reproductions will be accepted. All artworks must be publicly exhibited – no artworks from your home or other private space will be accepted.
