Turning Hawk and American Horse on the Wounded Knee Massacre (1890/1891)

Describe the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. What led to these conflicts? Were the Native Americans mainly fighting individual white settlers or the organized American military? Explain the outcomes of these wars.
2-3 well-written paragraphs that answer the question(s) and also provide historical context. That would be about a 2 page minimum paper.
Your first paragraph should provide the historical context. This is where you explain the time period in a general way. For example, if the topic is about the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s, your first paragraph should explain generally what was going on the 1950s in order to set the scene for the Civil Rights Movement. Provide historical facts a plenty, but be sure to explain the relevance of the details to the topic.
Your second and third paragraphs should focus specifically on answering the question(s) asked for that essay. Oftentimes, you will be asked for your opinion. Any opinion that is sufficiently supported by historical facts is valid. What’s important is that you provide numerous facts to support your argument. There are 2 source requirements that you must follow in order to get credit for this assignment:
Submit as a Word or PDF document. Include the prompt you selected at the title page.
Incorporate and cite BOTH the American Yawp textbook and the primary source packet attached.
You will need a Title Page and a Works cited included

These will be based on one primary source document of your choosing from Chapters 11-12 found in the documents reader, For the Record, that came as a companion to the textbook. (A primary source is something generated at or near the time of the event under examination.) The primary source document will be followed by Review Questions. Use those questions to guide your prose/essay response. Do not simply respond with bulleted or numbered answers. Again, the expectation for this assignment is college level analysis and writing. Make sure you have all the appropriate citations and a works cited. Include an accurate word count at the end of the essay that does NOT include footnotes or works cited. After carefully proofreading and checking that the word count is a minimum of 300 words, upload the PSJ to the assignment link before it closes on the given due date. Only RTF, DOC, or DOCX files will be accepted. Be sure to label your paper with the title of the document you chose. Each PSJ is worth 50 points.

By this point, you have done a lot of reading on your research project and on the history of the United States since 1865. The Collaborative Annotated Bibliography hopefully is bulging with contributions of resources from our course text as well as other source materials you might have discovered in working on your research projects. In this assignment, you will choose a few key sources that will be important to your overall research project and examine them more closely.
Here’s what to do:
Review the entries made to date in the Collaborative Annotated Bibliography by you as well as your classmates.
Choose 3-5 scholarly entries that you intend to use in your research paper to analyze.
Please do not select a full-length book for this assignment, though you may select chapters from a collection of writings or such things as the primary source documents included in our course text.
Please also do not select the news media entries that you entered in Module 2 or any other non-peer reviewed (or non-refereed) publications. There will be a place for those sources in your final research projects, just not in this assignment.
After you have made your selections, read the full text of the articles carefully. Then, prepare an essay (approximately 750-1,000 words) that analyzes the key points the authors make. Your essay should:
Identify whether the documents are a primary source or a secondary source, and evaluate each one’s historic value.
Use the materials as well as other awareness you are gaining on your topic to assess how key historians who have studied your topic have approached it.
Analyze similarities and differences between the various historians’ points of view.
Address how the writings shed light on your own developing perspective on the topic.
Reflect on the time period(s) in which the historians were writing in relation to the contemporary issues surrounding your topic.

Objective: This assignment aims to explore the concept of symbolic immortality through a critical reflection on selected readings and a film. By engaging with the materials, you will analyze how different cultures and philosophical perspectives understand and cope with death, and how these perspectives provide a sense of immortality.
Readings and Film (use at least 4):
*Conklin, Beth A. “Hunting the Ancestors: Death and Alliance in Wari’ Cannibalism.”
*Plato, “The Apology of Socrates” (W.H.D. Rouse translation).
*Lifton, Robert Jay, and Eric Olson. “Symbolic Immortality.”
Film: “The Phone of the Wind: Whispers to Lost Families” Links to an external site. (2016).
[Readings marked with * are available in the folder titled “Paper 3”]
Some ideas to consider while writing:
1. Introduction: Begin with a brief overview of the concept of symbolic immortality as discussed by Lifton and Olson. Define the term and explain its relevance to human societies and individual psychology. Does the concept of symbolic immortality assume the existence of “non-symbolic” immortality?
2. Analysis: Select at 4 of the provided readings and the film to explore how the concept of symbolic immortality is portrayed and understood in different cultural and philosophical contexts. For example, you could:
Discuss how the Wari’ people, as described by Conklin, understand and practice symbolic immortality through their funerary cannibalism and beliefs about ancestors.
Analyze Socrates’ perspective on death and immortality in Plato’s “Apology,” focusing on his arguments about the soul and the afterlife.
Reflect on the film “The Phone of the Wind: Whispers to Lost Families” and how it portrays symbolic immortality through the act of communication with lost loved ones.
Comparative Reflection: Compare and contrast the different approaches to symbolic immortality in the readings and the film. Consider questions such as:
How do different cultures and philosophies create and sustain a sense of immortality?
What are the psychological and social functions of these beliefs and practices?
How do these practices and beliefs help individuals and communities cope with the reality of death?
Questions to Guide Your Reflection on the readings:
1.How does the Wari’ practice of cannibalism serve as a form of symbolic immortality? What does this practice reveal about their understanding of life, death, and the afterlife?
2.In “The Apology,” how does Socrates argue for the immortality of the soul? How does his view of death challenge or support contemporary views on symbolic immortality?
3.How does the film “The Phone of the Wind” illustrate the concept of symbolic immortality? What emotions and thoughts are evoked through the act of speaking to lost loved ones?
4.How do Lifton and Olson’s categories of symbolic immortality (biological, creative, theological, natural, and experiential) apply to the readings and the film? Can you identify examples of each category in the materials?
5.What are the similarities and differences in the ways that the Wari’, Socrates, and the families in the film find meaning and continuity beyond death?
6.How do these different perspectives on symbolic immortality influence the way individuals and societies confront the inevitability of death?
Submission Guidelines:
paper should be 1000 words in length.
Use proper citations for the readings and the film.
Provide a clear and coherent argument supported by evidence from the texts and the film

“Free your mind.” – Morpheus, The Matrix
Black Women’s Studies theorizes and studies methodologies of/about, the intersectionality of Black women’s historical and contemporary experiences. Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham contends that feminist scholars, especially those of Black women’s history, must accept the challenge to bring race more prominently into their analyses of power. She accepts that challenge in “African American Women’s History and the Metalanguage of Race,” by investigating the three interrelated strategies for the explication of race: defining the construction and “technologies” of race, gender, and sexuality; exposing of the role and power of race as a metalanguage; and recognizing race as providing sites of dialogic exchange and contestation. In “Women of Harlem,” Kate Dossett accepts Higginbotham’s challenge and applies it to the Black women of the Harlem Renaissance.
Using Dossett’s filmed lecture, and the Higginbotham and Liu articles, discuss, interrogate, and opine intersectionality. How does the theory of intersectionality fundamentally and essentially change traditional analyses of power – from literary critique to historiography? How does ‘invisibility’ act as a double-voiced-discourse? How and why do the ‘politics of respectability’ illustrate the role of race in constructing gender’s power to mean? And how did contribute the artistic and intellectual work of the Black women of the Harlem Renaissance?

Part 1
Your assignment in this module is to complete a project focusing on the knowledge you have learned in these last three modules.  This project will be submitted in Voice Thread. You can use PowerPoint, Google Slides, Canva, etc to create your presentation, and then you will upload it and annotate it within the VoiceThread platform.
To complete this project, you are to choose 1 of the following topics from the options below for your presentation.
Modules 5, 6, and 7 focused on the changes that accompanied the emergence of Europe from the Middle Ages.  This was the period when Europe’s worldview completed its shift and evolved.  There can be no doubt that the Renaissance, Protestant Reformation, Scientific Revolution, and World Exploration were the contributing factors to this shift.
Project Options
Option 1: The Renaissance as the Spark for Change in Western Civilization
The Renaissance was a time of great creativity coming on the heels of the Dark Ages.
After a period of about 1,000 years known as the Dark Ages, the Renaissance was known as a time of renewal on many differing levels.
The term ‘Renaissance’ literally means rebirth or revival. As you learned it was a complex transitional movement that took place in Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries. It stressed rational thinking and humanism. During the Renaissance, many developments took place in literature, art, architecture, science, and technology. It marked the beginning of the modern era in Europe.
Create a slide presentation that chronicles the achievements of both the Italian and Northern Renaissance.  Analyze how the Renaissance was the beginning of a change in Europe.  What did the Italian or Northern Renaissance contribute to the changing mindset? Where was the greatest influence felt, arts, sciences, philosophy?  Choose one Renaissance figure that you think made the greatest contribution to the advancement of Western Civilization and explain why.  Be specific with your analysis using concrete examples from the text, lectures, and at least one scholarly source
